August 22nd 1 - 4 PM
BULK PULP ANIMISM gathers the paper remains of projects at Bulk Space to process into recycled, handmade paper. The focus of the workshop will be framed around the concept of animism - an acknowledgment of every living creature and ( inanimate ) objects containing an essence or even a soul based on its environment and properties. As the paper contains the essence of Bulk Space and its community centered facilitation, participants carry on these intentions of the facilitators and community into the crating of their own paper and future paper projects. The folk animist method of bringing to life or waking up our materials will also be shared through a conversation and engagement with the paper scraps itself. Although I will be facilitating the process of the paper making, the majority of crafting throughout the workshop is casual and hands on. Participants are encouraged to bring any harvested or gather flora to add to their paper if they wish and to make roughly 3 - 5 sheets of paper if allowed for resource and time.
I am a trans-disciplinary artist rooted in lens based mediums and folk practice. The folk diasporic, its materials, and our relationship to the camera body are running themes in my work taking form in video, performance, installation, and spoken word as haphazard, unreliable sources of perception. I have been facilitating community workshops and classes for over a decade throughout Metro-Detroit. Experimentation, discussion and contemplation about the essence of exchange is ever evolving and informing the process and materials necessary to express themes in the final bodies of my work.
